The poet, painter and engraver William Blake (1757-1827) was a typical misunderstood genius. He lived in poverty and obscurity, and only received recognition after his death. There were only a few short periods in which Blake could support himself by painting. Blake has never earned any money with his poetry. It was not until the second half of the twentieth century that Blake received the reputation of being Britainâs greatest poet since Shakespeare.
