Robert Groslot: Labyrinth
Hobo en percussie
|Uitgever||Groslot Music Editions|
This work for oboe and percussion lasts about 10 minutes. The percussion instruments include marimba, vibraphone, five tom-toms & bass drum, and are intended (and organized) to be played by one performer.
As the title suggests, the shape is very erratic. Three separate movements can be distinguished, but they reference constantly to one another. The preamble of the first section acts as a kind of ritornello, appearing in many places. The third section also ends with a variant thereof.
The second one, a "Canzone", indeed begins as a cantilena but then evolves through a virtuoso cadenza for both instrumentalists to an extremely fast scherzo. The revival of the song evolves in turn to a second 'cadence', after which the ritornello concludes this section.
The third part begins with a varied ostinato in the tom-toms and bass drum. The oboe plays a 'conjuring' melody upon this ostinato. Afterwards, there is also a variation where this ostinato pattern is played by the marimba. After this, the ritornello emerges again, this time fully developed, providing a "solution" to the listener on this labyrinth.(ISMN 9790570601172)
