In his little-known 1894 opera Hulda, French composer César Franck makes subtle use of a 4 saxophone ensemble to accompany an off-stage Chœur des pêcheurs (Chorus of Fishermen).
Recently discovered at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the hitherto unpublished fragment reveals rich harmonies that add color to the saxophone sound and beautifully convey the emotional essence of the music. In this concert version, a piano (or an organ) may be substituted for the vocal parts.
