Dit stuk is opgebouwd als een rapsodische suite in de stijl van de grote band-componisten van de vroege 20e eeuw (nationalistisch en trots op hun folklore-muziek). Het heeft 9 korte, samengevoegde delen in een vrije vorm, die populaire thema's en folkloristische kleuren mengen met meer abstracte delen, kamer- en orkestmuziek, en solistische passages. Het stuk is een symfonisch gedicht over de havenstad Oporto. Porto staat hier zowel voor de stad als voor de haven, letterlijk een beschutte plek.
