Im Februar 1706 hatte der junge Bach vor dem Konsistorium in Arnstadt zu erklären, „wo er unlängst so lange gewesen“. Der 20-jährige Organist rechtfertigte sich, „er sey zu Lübeck gewesen um daselbst ein und anderes in seiner Kunst zu begreifen“. Doch was wollte Bach in Lübeck „begreifen“? Dieser Frage gehen namhafte Bach-Forscher und Musikwissenschaftler in diesem Band nach.
Beleuchtet werden:
- die Musikkultur der Hansestadt um 1700,
- die musikalischen Erfahrungen, die Bach während seines dreimonatigen Lübeck-Aufenthaltes machte
- „norddeutsche“ Spuren in Bachs Werk,
- aufführungspraktische Besonderheiten der norddeutschen Musizierpraxis.
Der Band dokumentiert das vielbeachtete Internationale Symposion, das im Bach-Jahr 2000 an der Musikhochschule Lübeck stattfand.
