In 1914 publiceerde dr D.F. Scheurleer drie turven van boeken met teksten van Nederlandse verzen uit de periode 1350 - 1900 over de zee, de zeevaart en het matrozenleven. Van ongeveer honderd van deze teksten heeft Bert van Gelder in de oorspronkelijke zestiende-, zeventiende- en achttiende-eeuwse liedbundeltjes de bijbehorende melodieën opgezocht. Kees Vlak heeft deze melodieën vervolgens opnieuw en eigentijds voor koor met begeleiding gearrangeerd. In een serie van vier delen geven wij in totaal tachtig van deze liederen uit.
