Die langjährige Freundschaft zwischen Anne-Sophie Mutter und Krzysztof Penderecki hat nicht nur das zweite Violinkonzert („Metamorphosen“) und die zweite Violinsonate hervorgebracht, sondern auch das neue Duo concertante per violino e contrabbasso. Genauer gesagt wurde das Duo von der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung zur Förderung hochtalentierter Streicher in Auftrag gegeben. Die beiden Widmungsträger Anne-Sophie Mutter und ihr Stipendiat Roman Patkoló werden es am 9. März 2011 in Hannover zur Uraufführung bringen und anschließend wird das Stück auch mit auf Tournee gehen. Die USA Premiere wird am 3. April 2011 in New York stattfinden.Das anspruchsvolle Werk bietet in geschlossener und komprimierter Form vielerlei Stimmungen, von expressiven Rezitativen bis hin zu wild huschenden Scherzando-Passagen, bietet dem Publikum einige Überraschungen und verbindet kompositionstechnisch Altes und Neues. Die Noten des Basses sind in Skordatur notiert, d.h. die Saiten des Kontrabasses sind um einen Ganzton höher gestimmt.Vor allem für Kontrabass-Virtuosen also eine willkommene Bereicherung ihres Kammermusikrepertoires.
