Een kind speelt niet om zich te ontwikkelen, maar ontwikkelt zich - al spelend - in wisselwerking met zijn of haar omgeving. Dit geldt voor alle kinderen, maar zeker ook voor kinderen met een verstandelijke beperking. Dat zij zich niet vanzelfsprekend ontwikkelen en daarbij extra aandacht en begeleiding nodig hebben mag duidelijk zijn. Een goede interactie tussen kind en meespelende volwassene staat daarbij voorop.
De herziene druk van Spelend ontwikkelen bevat een inventarisatie van spelmogelijkheden en vormen van spelagogische begeleiding. De redactie heeft ervoor gekozen de opzet van het boek grotendeels te handhaven. De inhoud is uiteraard geactualiseerd en op een aantal punten verder verrijkt. Dat is met name het geval in het eerste nieuw toegevoegde hoofdstuk, waar de vakinhoudelijke visie op spel uiteen wordt gezet en waarin alle facetten van het spel aan de orde komen. Ook worden in dit boek verschillende nieuwe methoden beschreven op basis van actuele ontwikkelingen in het werkveld. Dat maakt Spelend ontwikkelen een belangrijk hulpmiddel voor therapeuten en gedragswetenschappers die betrokken zijn bij de zorg voor kinderen en volwassenen met een verstandelijke beperking.
