Mozart's Mass in C, K 317 (Coronation Mass), is without doubt one of the best-loved and most-performed orchestral masses. In contrast to 19th-century attitudes, today's music experts recognise the extraordinary musical and religious qualities of this mass. In the context of a largely secular age, this study examines the relevance for musical education of sacred music in general and Mozart's Coronation Mass in particular. In what setting can a successful encounter with this mass be initiated? What challenges do teachers face when engaging with sacred music and especially with the Coronation Mass? Using the form of a didactic analysis, the study examines the literally "remarkable" aspects of the Coronation Mass and devises strategies and goals for teaching music in schools, colleges and church congregations.
