Een contrabasconcerto schrijven is geen eenvoudige taak. De stem van het instrument voert niet op vanzelfsprekende wijze het woord. De verschillende thema's, hun uitwerking en de orkestratie moeten zorgvuldig gevormd en gecontroleerd worden. Een voorafgaande studie drong zich op.
Voor de harmonieken heb ik in het voorwoord een uitvoerige beschrijving gegeven van hun notatie en speelwijze. Ik koos voor de concertstemming (van boven naar beneden A - E - B - F sharp), en voor een kleine orkestbezetting (1 fluit, 1 hobo, 1 klarinet, 1 fagot, 1 hoorn, 1 trompet, pauken, vibrafoon, marimba, harp, celesta, strijkers).
Het concerto opent met een atonaal aanvoelende reeks in de contrabas. In het ganse concerto zullen trouwens atonale en verwijd-tonale passages mekaar afwisselen. Deze openingssequens mondt uit in een vloeiend, bijna zwevend Presto. Nadien volgen nog een afwachtende trage mars en een blij en wervelend allegro dat na een lange evolutie uitmondt in een speelse pizzicato passage met o.m. een virtuose two finger pizzicato!
Na de uitvoerige uitwerking van deze ideëen komt er een quasi ostinato coda met een opzwepende climax. Het concerto eindigt in rust met het beginidee.
