Ooit schreef Sebastian Savage in een boek over Bach dat hij
diens beroemde leerling Goldberg als een volkomen oninteressant
fenomeen beschouwde. Na de tragische dood van zijn zus besluit
Savage een kwart eeuw later in Dresden op zoek te gaan naar de
sporen die het legendarische wonderkind heeft achtergelaten in
archieven, brieven, documenten en in de straten van de barokke
stad. Obsessief reconstrueert hij het korte bestaan van een van de
schimmigste figuren uit de muziekgeschiedenis en komt Goldberg tot
leven in een reeks bizarre avonturen.
Goldberg is een ode aan Dresden, de grillige krullen van de rococo,
het genie van Bach, de verbeelding en de tragikomedie van het
leven. Daarnaast schetst Bert Natter een liefdevol portret van een
man uit onze tijd, die zijn onderwerp met een ongekende intensiteit
op de hielen zit, zonder dat hij zelf begrijpt waarom.
