Dit boek schetst een beeld van de verschillende facetten van Herman van Veen. Zijn werk wordt tegen het licht gehouden, waarbij aandacht uitgaat naar zowel hoogte- als dieptepunten. Wat typeert Herman als podiumkunstenaar? Welke ontwikkeling heeft hij doorgemaakt? Hoe is hij in de samenwerking met anderen? Emile Schra sprak met (oud-)medewerkers, collega's en familieleden. Daarnaast komt Van Veen uiteraard zelf aan het woord over zijn werk, zijn motieven, drijfveren, twijfels. Zo ontstaat een rijkgeschakeerd portret van de mens en kunstenaar die Van Veen is.
