Description

The composer Emilie Mayer achieved what few female musicians of the nineteenth century were granted: to make her skills into a career and find recognition in the process. She dedicated twelve sonatas to the cello; the last of these, the Sonata in D major, op. 47, also stands at the end of her great career as a composer. Just a few days before her death in April 1883, Mayer was in contact with the Bote & Bock Publishing Company regarding the publication. The sonata has a melodic, romantic character. The figuratively animated piano part shows what an outstanding pianist Mayer was. At the same time, the interaction of the cello and the piano is masterfully crafted.
Cellist and Mayer scholar Seonhwa Lee presents here, on the basis of the first edition and preserved autographs, the first Urtext edition of the work, and also contributes tried-and-tested markings in the cello part. The piano fingerings are provided by Nicholas Rimmer.
