Piano playing can only be learnt with attractive, good quality works from the very beginning. J. S. Bach composed masterful character pieces for his children and his many pupils; 18th-century piano tutors contained a selection of performance pieces, so that from their first encounter with the piano, learners could feel that they were performers.
