Linear drumming does not involve any superposition of sounds, since no two hits are happening simultaneously. Each note sounds individually, and together they are forming one single line through time. Compared to the normal 'layered' playing, the linear concept makes rhythms and fills sound more fluid and defined. The flexibility and the diversity of sounds make linear drumming very expressive. This method introduces two different ways of getting into the linear way of thinking. The section 'rhythm approach' starts with the most basic linear rhythm, gradually adding and displacing bass and snare drums, using cymbal variations and hi-hat openings. This finally leads to the awareness of different stickings, nevertheless always according to an underlying rhythm. The section 'sticking approach' starts with a wide variety of stickings, exploring different possibilities and sounds. The use of the bass drum as a substitution for the hands introduces a huge number of figures and finally leads to the most complex rhythms and fills, nevertheless always according to a certain sticking. The mastering of both approaches is the key to the best linear grooves and makes it easier to integrate linear playing in non-linear, layered rhythms.
