Odd Time Signatures: from 3/4 to 19/16
In most rhythmic music there is a driving force, led by a recurring main accent, which is the first beat of a measure, therefore the strongest. The other accents within a measure divide the space in between the main accents. When this division is not occurring equally it is called an irregular or asymmetrical measure. By definition, irregular measures are not divisible by two (binary) or three (ternary), so their numerators are prime numbers: 5, 7, 11, 13, etc. The method is divided into three chapters, one for each denominator: 4, 8 and 16. For every meter, the construction of the rhythms is determined by the difference in the groupings of the quarter notes, eighth notes or sixteenth notes. Regular time signatures can also sound irregular when divided into unequal parts. This is why this method also deals with meters such as 12/8, 6/4 and even 4/4. Each time signature starts with the most basic form of the rhythms, that are being developed by adding bass drums in eighth and sixteenth notes, snare drum ghost notes and displacements, cymbal variations, accentuations and fills, including linear playing, ternary rhythms and special groupings.
